Glycerol is odorless and colorless, liquid on room temperature, chemically a sugar alcohol. It has been known for its moisturizing effect for a long time, even our grandmothers used glycerine handcreams.
If you dose it reasonably, it moisturizes the skin, but it is forbidden to use it on its own, because it will act as a desiccant. Only use it in emulsions that contain water too, this way it is beneficial to the skin. If there is more then 10% glycerol in an emulsion, then you will achieve the opposite effect: it will extract the moisture out of the deeper layers of the skin, so the skin will dry out from the inside. This also means that you should avoid products that list glycerol the second or third place after water on the ingredients list.
Nowdays glycerine is made as a by-product of soap and biodiesel production. In natural cosmetics, only vegetable glycerine is allowed.
Glycerol is really easy to use: can be warmed up with the water base, it isn't heat sensitive.
